HA NOI — The audience cheered last night at the Ha Noi Opera House as Ho Chi Minh City-based singer Duc Tuan accepted his prize for Singer of the Year at the fifth annual Music Contribution Prize.

Tuan also took the Album of the Year category for his record Music of the Night.

Ho Hoai Anh walked away with the Musician of the Year award and music show Nguoi Tinh by singer Dam Vinh Hung won the Programme of the Year category.

Four nominees were named in each of the contest's four categories by 100 journalists from around the country who specialise in music and culture. When the nominees were finalised, they all cast their votes for the top entertainer.

"The votes were not as close as we predicted," said Ngo Ha Thai, deputy general director of the Vietnam News Agency and editor-in-chief of The Thao&Van Hoa (Sports&Culture) newspaper. "The winners all won with overwhelming numbers."

Organised by The Thao&Van Hoa and Le & Brothers Limited, the award aims to recognise the best singers, musicians, albums, shows and programmes of the year.

Tuan, who was born in the southern province of An Giang in 1980, also took the top prize at the HCM City Television Singing Contest in 2000. He specialises in gentle pop ballads and music from the 1930's to 1950's.

In last years' awards, My Tam was named Singer of the Year, and Do Bao was awarded Musician of the Year. Canh Cung 2 – Thoi Gian De Yeu (Bow 2 – Time for Love), also by Do Bao, was selected as Album of the Year while Vietnamese Songs went home with the Programme of the Year award. — VNS
