HA NOI — The Cuban band Los Tradicionales will perform for audiences in the northern region following their appearance at this week's Hue Festival.

Los Tradicionales was established in 1952 by Cuban singer, guitarist and composer Carlos Manuel Puebla, a luminary of the trova music movement in Cuba in the late 1960s.

Puebla is a master of boleros and nationalistic songs. His five-member band, which includes marimba, requinto-guitar, maracas and bongo drum players, has performed around the world.

A self-taught guitarist, Puebla began composing music in the 1930s, and garnered a certain amount of popularity in his native city. From 1962 he was a regular performer in La Bodeguita del medio, a bar-restaurant in Havana which was a favourite haunt of Cuban and foreign intellectuals.

Puebla started building his international profile in the 1960s with several tours abroad. His songs about the people's struggle earned him the name of El Cantor de la Revolucion (the singer of the revolution).

Puebla is also known for his passionate love songs, such as Quiero Hablar Contigo (I'd Like to Talk with You) and Este Amor De Nosotros (This Love of Ours). His most famous song, Hasta Siempre, comandante, has been covered by dozens of artists from all over the world, including French singer Nathalie Cardone and the Buena Vista Social Club.

Puebla's shows in northern Viet Nam are scheduled to take place at the Viet Bac Arts and Culture College in the northern city of Thai Nguyen next Monday, the Ha Noi Opera House in Ha Noi next Wednesday and the August Theatre in Hai Phong next Thursday. — VNS
