Fencers secure gold in team event

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam won its 109th gold at the 32nd SEA Games on Monday after fencers succeeding in the morning session in Phnom Penh.

Nguyễn Văn Quyết, Vũ Thành An, Tô Đức Anh and Nguyễn Xuân Lợi defeated arch-rivals Singapore 45-31 in the men's sabre team to defend their top place.

The Vietnamese team has dominated this category for five Games in ten years.

But their teammates in the women's foil team could not match their success, losing 25-23 to Singapore to place second.

In weightlifting, Đinh Thị Thu Uyên claimed a silver in the women's 64kg with a lift of 194kg in total.

She was behind Tsabitha Alfiah Ramazani of Indonesia who made 204kg. The bronze went to Nur Syazawani of Malaysia with 184kg.

In other events, Huỳnh Văn Tuấn earned a place in the final of the men's 51kg low kick category of kick-boxing. He will fight Chaithong Raseesaroch of the hosts in the evening session.

His teammate Nguyễn Hoàng will face Dimitri Kyttanasilalack of Laos in the men's 63.5kg low kick final.

Trần Minh Hậu will be against Indonesian Abdul Aziz in the men's 63kg kick light.

Arnis martial artists will have four finals while the wrestlers will take part in six events.

In other sports of e-sports, taekwondo, judo and Chinese chess are all currently at the qualification stage. Vietnamese athletes are expected to enter the finals of these sports in the evening. — VNS
