HÀ NỘI -- Midfielder Nguyễn Quang Hải on July 18 signed a contract to extend his relationship with Hà Nội Police for three years.

After much speculation, the international Hải decided to commit his future to the former champions, instead of seeking a future abroad.

Hải came to the Police last June after a failed overseas season at Pau FC in France where he spent most of his time on the bench.

Returning to Việt Nam, he took some time to find his feet, but still played role in helping the Police top the national premier league.

In the 2023-24 season, the 27-year-old player was one of the club's stars, although they failed to defend their crown.

His contract with the Police ended at the end of the season and there was speculation he might have reached an agreement to play for Japanese side Consadole Sapporo FC.

However, Hải seemed to change his mind at the last minute and wanted to play in Việt Nam to stay close to his family, with them just welcoming a new baby boy.

It is reported that in signing a new contract, Hải will be getting a Việt Nam record of VNĐ27 billion (US$1.07 million) in three years, along with a monthly salary.

"During negotiations, the club managers and I prioritised talking about our future targets, not contract costs which is just a number," said Hải.

"We both try to find the most suitable thing to help the club develop and achieve better results. I received their trust and we share same goals and we will succeed together. Many clubs sent me offers but I have chosen one that best suits me."

The new season will begin next month and the Police will also compete in the regional club championship which will be organised again after nearly two decades in abeyance. VNS
