ABU DHABI — Iraq came from behind twice to overcome Viet Nam 3-2 in Group D of the Asian Cup 2019 yesterday.

Viet Nam took the lead in the 24th minute after Nguyen Quang Hai’s through-ball to Cong Phuong led sweeper Ali Faez to back-heel the ball into his own net.

Iraq’s midfield was stifled for the most part, but a mistake from Duy Manh led to the equaliser.

Taking the lead for a second time, Quang Hai’s cross was met by midfielder Trong Hoang whose shot was saved, only for Cong Phuong to pounce on the rebound.

In the second half, Duc Chinh replaced Cong Phuong but had little luck.

In the 59th minute, Ngoc Hai failed to prevent Humam Tareq Faraj from scoring to make it 2-2, and Ali Adnan scored a peach of a free kick in the 89th minute to finish the comeback for Iraq. — VNS
