HA NOI — Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem finished third at the 2019 Spring Chess Classic in the US on Monday.
Liem, who has an Elo rating of 2,710, beat No 1 seed Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine (Elo 2,713) in his final game.
Liem finished with five points after nine games. Xiong Jeffery of the US (Elo 2,666) took the title with six points. Illya Igorevich Nyzhnyk of Ukraine (Elo 2,638) was second with 5.5 points.
The event attracted 10 grandmasters.
The event was the first of four tournaments this year featuring international chess professionals. Over the course of 10 days, competitors battled for more than US$30,000 in prize money and gained valuable experience at a top-level event. — VNS
