Minh and his wife have a win in Việt Nam Open

HA NOI — Viet Nam’s top male badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh and his wife Vu Thi Trang won in the Yonex Sunrise - Viet Nam Open in HCM City on Wednesday.

Minh, world No 58, easily beat Daniel Fan of Australia, world No 197, 21-14, 21-8 after only 23 minutes in the men’s singles second round.

Meanwhile, Minh’s wife, Vu Thi Trang, who is world No 53, defeated Mine Ayumi of Japan, world No 76, 24-22, 18-21, 21-11 in the women’s singles first round.

Olympian Minh will next meet Thammasin Sitthikom of Thailand, world No 45, while Trang will face Portip Buranaprasertsuk, world No 82, also of Thailand.

Besides, Do Tuan Duc and Pham Nhu Thao qualified for the second round of the mixed doubles event. National team members Pham Cao Cuong and Nguyen Thuy Linh were ousted from the first round of the mixed doubles.

The tournament has attracted more than 400 professional badminton players from 26 nations and territories, competing in the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, with total prize money of US$75,000. — VNS
