HÀ NỘI — Hoàng Dư Ý is the sole Vietnamese representative at the World Athletics U20 Championship, which is organised in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, from August 1-6.
Ý will compete in the women's 100m event, which sees 56 runners divided into seven heats in the qualification.
Three of each heat plus the three fastest times qualify for the semi-finals.
Last year, Tina Clayton of Jamaica took gold. Beatrice Masilingi from Namibia and Mélissa Gutschmidt of Switzerland were second and third, respectively.
Ý will run in the fourth heat on August 3. Her personal best is 11.83sec, while her seasonal best is 11.94.
She qualified for the Cali event after winning a silver medal at the 2021 National Athletics Championship with a time of 12.01, which the International Association of Athletics Federation accepted.
Ý, 18, was a member of the national team competing in the recent 31st SEA Games. She won a silver in the 4x100m relay for the first time at the regional sports meet.
The World Championship has received more than 1,500 athletes from 145 teams from all continents, competing in 22 events for both men and women. VNS
