HOI AN — The first festival featuring ancient Thanh Ha pottery is being organised in Hoi An, creating a platform for pottery villages to exchange experience as well as promoting tourism to the ancient town.
Highlights of the event include an exhibition of products from traditional pottery villages around Viet Nam like Phu Lang (in the northern province of Bac Ninh), Huong Canh (northern province of Vinh Phuc), Phuoc Tich (central city of Hue) or Bau Truc (southern province of Ninh Thuan).
Additionally, an installation art exhibition of pottery, art and fashion, as well as food and movie presentations are also featured. The event concludes on Tuesday.
Thanh Ha pottery village, 3km to the east of Hoi An, is believed to have been established in the 16th century, when artisans from the central province of Thanh Hoa settled in Hoi An. Locals have preserved their traditional methods of making pottery by hand and wheel for centuries. Their products are not enamelled and heated in a traditional wood kiln so they have different colours of yellow, red, red brick, brown, pink or black. — VNS
