HCM CITY — Chuyen Tinh Nang Giang Huong (Love Story of Giang Huong), a musical based on Vietnamese fairy tale Tu Thuc Gap Tien (Tu Thuc Meets a Fairy), will return for eight nights at the HCM City Opera House.
The play is about the love between Tu Thuc, a poor man, and a fairy named Giang Huong, who face problems being together. Their love does not have a happy ending.
The co-production of French director Sylvain Merille and Vietnamese director Tran Nguyen Thien Huong premiered at Hoa Binh Theatre in 2016, using music by famous composers such as Van Cao, Trinh Cong Son, Pham Duy and Ngo Thuy Mien.
In order to prepare for the return, Huong and composer Nguyen Hoang Anh have written 21 new songs for the musical, featuring Vietnamese traditional music, semi-classic, pop, rock and Latin music.
“The music is a blend of traditional music and Western music,” Huong said. “To renew the play, we used thousands of metres of fiber optic lights to feature the actors’ performances and stimulate the audiences’ imagination.”
The musical will feature 20 veteran and young actors, including Nam Khanh, Hoang Kim, Thanh Nguyen and Duyen Quynh, who are graduates of the HCM City Conservatory of Music.
Chuyen Tinh Nang Giang Huong has been staging from November 20-23 and December 1-4 at the Opera House at 7 Lam Son Square in District 1.
Tickets are available at the venue and at www.ticketbox.vn. — VNS
