HA NOI — As part of the ‘Black-in-White Movie Month’, the Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) will present a movie by director Ana Lily Amirpour tomorrow night.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a Persian-language American vampire western film, which is also the debut feature of the English director. The movie received rave reviews after its premiere at Sundance in 2014, when it was shown as part of the annual series New Directors/New Films.
Tagged as “The first Iranian vampire Western”, the film is described as being set in “the Iranian ghost-town Bad City” and depicts the antics of “a lonesome vampire".

The film stars Sheila Vand (“Argo”) as the Girl, a lovely yet world-weary bloodsucker who falls hard for an equally attractive boy (Arash Marandi) in a ’57 Thunderbird convertible. When she’s not wondering if she’s got a future with her new guy, she’s ridding the town of assorted miscreants and creeps.
Guy Lodge of Variety said: “Ana Lily Amirpour’s auspicious debut feature is a sly, slinky vampire romance set in an imaginary Iranian underworld.”
Boyd van Hoeij, for The Hollywood Reporter, praised the movie, saying “this moody and gorgeous film is finally more about atmosphere and emotions than narrative – and none the worse for it.”
The screening of the drama-horror movie at TPD will start at 7.30pm. It will be presented in original language of Persian with Vietnamese subtitles. Donation (at the door): VND20,000/person. TPD is at 51 Tran Hung Dao Street. — VNS
