HA NOI — In the last week of the ‘Black-and-White Movie Month’, the Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) will present a screening of German movie The White Ribbon tomorrow night.
Written and directed by Austrian film-maker Michael Haneke, The White Ribbon, according to The Guardian, is “a ghost story without a ghost, a whodunnit without a denouement, a historical parable without a lesson, and this unforgettably disturbing and mysterious film leads its viewers alongside an abyss of anxiety.”
The 144-minute feature depicts society and a family in a remote village in northern Germany in 1913, just before World War I and, according to the director, “is about the roots of evil.”
The film premiered at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in May 2009 where it won the Palme d’Or, followed by positive reviews and several other major awards, including the 2010 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film also received two nominations at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2009 for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography.
The film screening is for educational purposes and to raise funds for the Young Cinema Fund at TPD. The screening will start at 7pm. TPD is at 51 Tran Hung Dao Street (4th floor). Donation (at the door): VND20,000/person. — VNS
