Binh Dinh to host music festival

BINH DINH — A music festival to celebrate the achievements of composers and singers will take place on March 26 – 27 in Quy Nhon in the central province of Binh Dinh.

The festival, organised by the Viet Nam Musicians' Association, will feature over 300 artists, performing works chosen by the association.

A conference on the ethnic cultural aspects of music will also take place on the sidelines.

Rare Han-Nom documents exhibited

THUA THIEN HUE — An exhibition featuring thousands of original and digitised versions of Han Chinese - Nom documents issued during the Le (1428-1788), Tay Son (1778-1802) and Nguyen (1802-1945) dynasties has opened at the provincial library of Thua Thien Hue.

A workshop on Han Chinese - Nom heritage was also organised on Tuesday with the participation of researchers from HCM City and Hue, as well as representatives from villages in the province, where Han - Nom documents have been found. The workshop discussed the preservation, exchange, digitalisation and development of the values of the documents.

Jazz gig lauds Trinh Cong Son

HA NOI — A jazz concert will be held on April 2 in Ha Noi to celebrate the tenth anniversary of musician Trinh Cong Son.

The concert will be performed by a group of amateur singers, and will feature 20 of Son's most popular songs.

Lead singers Khoi Minh and Nguyet Ca along with pianist Khang Nhi said they hoped the concert would be a chance for Son's fans to enjoying his love ballads with a jazz twist.

Khoi Minh is a reporter for Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper. He released an album in 2009 featuring two songs by Son. Nguyet Ca is an English teacher. She is the founder of Trinh's Music Box, an online music facility that has been running for nine years.

The two singers recently performed some of Son's songs at a show to raise funds for flood victims in the central provinces.

Trinh Cong Son (1939 – 2001) was a Vietnamese composer, musician, painter and songwriter. He was widely considered as one of the most salient figures of modern Vietnamese music.

Son wrote over 600 songs during the 1960s and 1970s, and American singer Joan Baez dubbed him the Bob Dylan of Viet Nam for his moving antiwar songs. His music remains very popular among both old and young Vietnamese.

Sculptors display abstract works

HA NOI — The Viet Art Centre in Ha Noi is hosting a joint exhibition by sculptors Dao Chau Hai from Ha Noi, Van Ngoc from the southern city of Vung Tau, and Phan Phuong Dong from HCM City, displaying their abstract sculptures that use graphics and visual effects to make a new impact on viewers.

The sculptors will hold a talk at the exhibition on March 30, which runs through the end of the month at 42 Yet Kieu Street.

HCM City TV station goes grey

HCM CITY — HCM City Television (HTV) and May Quynh Media Company have launched the first ever reality music show for middle-aged and elderly people that will begin next month.

Huynh Van Nam, HTV general director, said the station has organised many TV shows for young contestants in recent years while older audiences have never had a chance to show off their talents.

Tieng Hat Mai Xanh (Evergreen Singing) is aimed at people aged 35 and above,he added.

Contestants, divided into two groups of between 35 and 50 and above 51, will perform folk, revolutionary, pre-war, and romantic music.

Three best performers in each group will enter the final to be held at the HTV Theatre in May.

Entries can be sent until March 31 to HTV, 9 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, District 1. — VNS
