HCM CITY — Tre (Youth) Publishing House on Wednesday released Dia ly hoc Tu nhien, Kinh te va Lich su Nam Ky (Natural geography, economics, and history of southern Viet Nam), a series of books discussing different aspects of lives in the southern provinces of Viet Nam during the 20th century.

The 14-book series was originally written in French by the Indochina Scientific Research Association during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Six of them, featuring Ben Tre, Gia Dinh, Vinh Long, Chau Doc, Long Xuyen and Sa Dec provinces, hit the shelves first while the remaining eight will be introduced in 2018.

They were translated into Vietnamese by renowned translators Nguyen Nghi and Nguyen Thanh Long.

Each book, with a different length, consists of four chapters, including geography, economics, history, statistics and administration.

According to Nghi, this is the first time Dia ly hoc Tu nhien, Kinh te va Lich su Nam Ky is fully translated into Vietnamese, with its structure following that of the original French version.

Readers will have a realistic picture of southern Viet Nam during the early 20th century through French people’s perceptions, he said. — VNS
