Concert to celebrate Bastille Day

HA NOI — French conductor Hacene Larbi will be conducting the Ha Noi Philharmonic Orchestra on July 13 at the Ha Noi Opera House.

The concert will feature three works – Roman Carnival Opus 9, Summer Nights; Peony Pavillion; and Bolero by French composers Hector Berlioz; Maurice Ravel and Hacene Larbi.

Larbi is currently the musical director for the Entretemps Ensemble and the GAIA Orchestra in Paris. He also teaches musical composition, chamber music, orchestral direction and master classes in Europe, Kyoto and Beijing. He is a member of the experts' commission at the Direction des Affaires Culturelles de la Region Ile de France and the Conseil Artistique de l'Auditorium Saint-Germain

In great demand all over the world, he serves as featured conductor for many orchestras, including the Miguel Angel Estrella's Orchestra for Peace, the Orchestra of Bartok's Festival in Budapest and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.

He studied both piano and French horn, and was awarded five prizes at the Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique de Paris.

Performing at the concert will be mezzo sopranoist Marie Kobayashi, who was born in Japan, who studied at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo.

She was a contemporary of celebrated artists Regine Crespin, Michel Roux and William Christie. She graduated in song and interpretation of early vocal music.

She has won numerous international awards, such as the Faure Prize International Contest of Singing French Melodies and the Certificate of Honour from the Maria Canals International Competition in Barcelona.

Since 2004, she has been a professor at the Conservatory of Strasbourg.

Established in 1997, the Ha Noi Philharmonic Orchestra has performed in France, Japan, Laos, Thailand and Russia.

The Japanese Royal Committee presented it with a "Special Prize" for supporting young talent in 1998.

The concert will begin at 8pm. Tickets are available at the French Cultural Centre at Ha Noi's 24 Trang Tien Street. — VNS
