HA NOI — The Canh Dieu Vang (Golden Kite) Awards will be presented at HCM City's Hoa Binh Theatre on March 13, coinciding with Viet Nam Cinema Day.
Eleven feature films are in competition for the Golden Kite Awards, including Canh Dong Bat Tan (Floating Lives), Co Dau Dai Chien (Battle of the Brides), Long Thanh Cam Gia Ca (The Fate of a Songstress in Thang Long) and Vu Dieu Dam Me (Dance of Passion).
The contenders are produced by both private and State-owned studios, including Viet Nam Feature Film, Feature Film Studio I, Liberation Film, Viet Nam Cinema Association Film and BHD.
Audiences in HCM City will have a chance to enjoy all 11 films during March 10-13 at the Tan Son Nhat Cinema Centre and Fafilm Cinema. Free tickets can be picked up at these two locations, beginning on March 8.
Tran Luan Kim, former president of the Viet Nam Cinema Association, will be the chief of the 13-member jury in the feature film category. Other prestigious filmmakers, including director Bui Dinh Hac, screenwriter Nguyen Thi Hong Ngat, and screenwriter Le Ngoc Minh, will lead jury panels for documentary and scientific films, short films and video films.
The awards have been presented annually by the Viet Nam Cinema Association since 2003.
"The Golden Kite Award is granted for professional works which have a positive effect on audiences and society," said Viet Nam Cinema Association president Dang Xuan Hai.
This year will mark the first time that the Golden Kites will honour the year's best short film. The award is expected to encourage more young filmmakers to enter the field, Hai said.
In addition to the 11 feature films, this year's awards competiting has attracted 41 short films, 37 documentaries, 19 video films, nine cartoons, and five scientific films.
The presentation of the awards will be broadcast live on VTV2 and VTV4, and the ceremony will commemorate three late directors who devoted their lives to national cinema: Nguyen Van Thong, Tran Vu and Nguyen Ngoc Quynh.
Cinema Day will also feature a workshop reflecting on the career of screenwriter Ngat, to be held on March 11 at the Centre of Cinema Art Research and Film Archives in HCM City, as well as a film festival in Ha Noi, the Viet Nam Cinema Association announced.
Classic films from different periods of Vietnamese cinema will be screened in the capital city, including Chi Dau (Mrs Dau), Doi Cat (Sand Life), and Nhin Ra Bien Ca (Looking to the Sea).
Audiences in Ha Noi can obtain free tickets for the film screenings at the August Theatre, the National Cinema Centre, the Viet Nam Film Institute and the Centre for Scientific and Documentary Films, beginning next Wednesday. — VNS
