Films screened for National Day

HCM CITY — Film screenings will be held around the country next week to celebrate the country's National Day on September 2.

Organised by the Viet Nam Cinema Department, Distribution and Screening Film Company (Fafilm VN) and Viet Nam Film Studios together with local cinemas, there will be a full schedule of Vietnamese films and documentaries on the country's wars and the sacrifices made by citizens and soldiers.

It will include nine films, including Dung Dot (Don't Burn), Hoai Vu Trang (White Dance), Nhin Ra Bien Ca (Looking to the Sea), Chop Mat Cung So Phan (A Moment of Destiny) and Duoc Song (Get A Life).

Produced by the State-owned Army Film Studios and Viet Nam Film Studios, the films portray soldiers, war veterans and heroes who have dedicated their lives to the country's freedom and development.

Dang Nhat Minh's Dung Dot tells the life of doctor-martyr Dang Thuy Tram, who worked at a field hospital for liberation fighters for two years from 1968 to 1970, until her death.

This year, the film won the Viet Nam Cinematography Association's four Golden Kite Awards for best feature film, best director, best sound effects, and best actress in a leading role. Also, there will be seven documentaries screened, including Tieng Vi Cam O My Lai (The Sound of the Violin in My Lai), Cao Nguyen Da (Stone Highlands), Buoc Ngoat (A Turning Point), and Le Trong Tan Mot Doi Tran Mac (General Le Trong Tan's Life and Battles).

Directed by Tran Van Thuy, the 32-minute work Tieng Vi Cam O My Lai reviews the history and legacy of the My Lai massacre, an incident of the American war in which hundreds of Vietnamese civilians were killed by American soldiers.

The film tells the effects of the massacre, featuring the story of the return of two American soldiers, Hugh Thompson and Larry Colburn, to My Lai on the 30th anniversary of the event.

Le Trong Tan Mot Doi Tran Mac, a production of the Ha Noi-based Viet Nam Documentary Film Studio, depicts the life and victories of hero Le Trong Tan, one of the country's greatest generals, who commanded historic battles such as Binh Gia, Dong Xoai and Tri Thien during the American war.

The screenings will be held from August 31 to September 6.

The organisers will also deliver videos and DVDs of the films to people living in remote areas and islands. — VNS
