HA NOI — A free show featuring north Indian folk arts will take place at the Ha Noi Opera House on next Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Around 15 artists from the Ladakh Culture and Art Troupe from the north of India will perform at the show.
Established in 2004, the troupe now consists of 25 artists, who give regular performances featuring traditional music, dance and theatre of the Ladakh region.
The troupe, directed by veteran artist Tsering Sonam Sopari, aims to preserve the cultural symbols of the region including traditional costumes, music, instruments and folk tales.
Silk art pioneer's sketches on display
HCM CITY — A collection of nearly 200 sketches by Nguyen Phan Chanh, the pioneer of modern Vietnamese silk painting, is on show in HCM City.
They include water-colour, pencil, and charcoal sketches that were often turned into silk paintings later by the artist.
Tran Hau Tuan, who owns the collection, said he bought it in 2008.
Chanh, who was born in 1892 in Ha Tinh Province and died in 1984, became one of the first students of the Indochina Fine Arts College in 1925.
His works featured landscapes, images from daily life, and portraits.
Among his best-known works are Choi O An Quan (Children at Play) in 1931 which depicts young ladies playing a traditional game.
His works have been exhibited in France, Italy, the US, and Japan.
The exhibition, at Eight Gallery, 8A Phung Khac Khoan, District 1, will be on until April 25. — VNS
