HA NOI — Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (TMSO) are set to perform classic and modern pieces during their forthcoming tour of Viet Nam.

Prior to the main nights, the TMSO will perform this Sunday at Ha Noi Opera House in a joint peformance featuring the Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO). The night will feature works such as Toyama Yuzo's Rhapsody for Orchestra; Do Hong Quan's Rhapsody Viet Nam, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5.

Rhapsody for Orchestra was composed in 1960. The work displays typical Japanese traditional idioms. It is regarded as the most popular masterpiece of Japanese orchestral works.

The themes of this work derive from well-known folk songs, while effectively utilising Japanese traditional percussion instruments.

Rhapsody Viet Nam premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow in June 1985. It has previously been performed in Russia, Uzebekistan, and Japan..

The concert will be performed by the TMSO and the VNSO under the baton of conductor Tetsuji Honna.

TMSO was formed in 1965 as a part of a cultural promotion project of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to mark the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Since then, the orchestra has grown to become one of Japan's foremost professional orchestras under the music directorship of conductors such as Tadashi Mori, Akeo Watanabe and Hiroshi Wakasugi.

The TMSO tour programme will include Violin Concerto and Symphony No1 by Johannes Brahms. It will feature 2001 Pablo Sarasate Grand Prize winner and winner of the 2002 Tchaikovsky Competition, violinist Tamaki Kawakubo.

Kawakubo has performed numerous recitals in Japan, Spain, Germany, Israel and made her Kennedy Centre Recital debut in 2009.

The TMSO Harmony Tour programme will begin with a performance at Ha Noi's Opera House on November 9 and HCM City's Municipal Theatre on November 12 at 8pm.

Tickets for the shows in Ha Noi are on sale at No 1, Trang Tien Street, Ha Noi. — VNS
