Show to benefit victims of Agent Orange opens

HA NOI — The charitable show, "Cong Ly va Trai Tim" (Justice and Heart), was aired on Viet Nam Television on Sunday to celebrate Agent Orange Day on August 10.

The show, which was organised by the Viet Nam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA),Viet Nam Television and the Thang Long Joint Stock Company, honoured organisers and individuals, overseas Vietnamese and international communities for their support for Agent Orange victims.

"I want to give my sincere thanks to the domestic and foreign organisations that have been supporting VAVA for a long time," said president of the association Nguyen Van Rinh.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan attended the show and delivered a speech to pay his tribute to those who continue to fight for justice and human rights.

In 2004, VAVA filed suit against American chemical companies for spraying toxic chemicals in many regions across the country.

Tran Thi Hoan, VAVA's legal representative at the trial, expressed her hope that there will be a brighter future for Agent Orange victims.

"I believe we will win in this fight," said Hoan.

Several famous pop singers performed in the show with the hopes of spreading a peaceful message to their audience.

The show received VND8 billion (US$ 420 million) in donations.

Hue commemorates early dong printing press

HUE — The Ministry of Finance and Thua Thien-Hue Province have unveiled a plaque in Hue to commemorate one of the first presses set up to print dong notes.

In 1946 President Ho Chi Minh gave approval to the ministry to issue dongs to replace the French Indochinese piastre at par.

The notes were printed in the northern, southern, and central regions, with the central press being set up at the beginning of 1946 on Hang Be Street (now Huynh Thuc Khang Street) in Hue.

It printed one and five dong notes.

The press was recently recognised as a historical and revolutionary site by the Government.

Contest seeks nation's best tour guide

HA NOI — A National Tour Guide Contest intended to promote tour guiding as a profession, standardise the quality of tour guides and improve tourism services, was launched by the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism on Monday.

The administration asked provincial Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism to carry out the selection of excellent tour guides across the country.

Contestants will compete in two rounds, where they will face different types of tests.

Winners would receive a total award of VND14 million (US$ 718) from sponsors.

The final round of the contest will be held on August 15. — VNS
