HÀ NỘI -- The National Golf Championships 2024 will feature 150 athletes vying for a big bonus of VNĐ1.2 billion (US$47,500).
The championship, organised by Tiền Phong Newspaper, the Sports Authority of Việt Nam (SAV) and Hải Phòng People's Committee, is the oldest and largest event in the country and one that is the foundation for the national golf competition system of the Vietnam Golf Association.
Debuting in 2005, the tournament has become a firm favourite, where amateur and professional golfers compete equally with the best ones being named as national team members.
The 2024 tournament will be held on August 14-17 at the Vinpearl Golf Hải Phòng.
One hundred and twenty male golfers and 30 female competitors will play four rounds of 18 holes. A cut will be made after two rounds. The remaining 40 men and 12 women will for play for VNĐ1 billion and VNĐ200 million bonuses, respectively.
There will be four Hole in Ones with huge awards to be given for any golfer who can make successful stroke in four days of competitions.
"The national championship is held to find out best Vietnamese golfers. From this competition, many players such as Chúc An, Anh Minh, Nhất Long and Khánh Minh have made their mark in international tournaments," said Phùng Công Sưởng, editor-in-chief of Tiền Phong News Paper and co-head of organising board.
"It is clearly that the championship has been doing its mission well, nurturing and honouring Vietnamese golf talents."
Attending the press conference, SAV Deputy Director Lê Thị Hoàng Yến, praised effort of the organising board, sponsors and host city.
She said that the national champions would be Việt Nam's representatives in international events including the 33rd SEA Games in 2025. She hoped that in the future they would reach Asian level and earn official spots to compete in the Olympics. VNS
