A Christmas Day walk

HA NOI — The Friends of Vietnam Heritage will host a morning walk on Christmas Day to discover Nguyen Cong Tru Street and surrounding area.

The walk will starts outside the house number 5D Ham Long Street, where the first Communist Party cell of Ha Noi was established, then along Lo Duc Street to the Pasteur Garden, and outside the National Institute of Hygiene & Epidemiology (originally the Pasteur Institute), before coming back to Lo Duc and to Nguyen Cong Tru Street.

The walk will feautre some of the buildings from the French era, which have been pulled down to make way for various developments. Carry on to Hai Ba Trung Lake and the next door temple complex where the group will learn about the Hai Ba Trung sisters’ contribution to Vietnamese history.

For the final part of the walk, the group will meander the lanes of Cho Gioi, one of Ha Noi’s huge and intriguing city markets specialised in one type of goods. The walk will end where the market meets Hue Street.

This eclectic walk touches on several influences that shaped Ha Noi, from the Communist Party to a market where you can find every possible type of tool and spare car parts.
