Korean Alphabet Day 2018 celebrated in HCM City

HCM City — Fourteen universities, colleges and schools in southern Viet Nam have celebrated the 9th Korean Alphabet Festival in HCM City.

The festival, known as Hangeul Day 2018 with the theme as “Hangeul connects people”, took place on October 14 at the HCM City University of Technology to commemorate the 572nd anniversary of Hangeul Proclamation Day. 

Co-organised by the Korean Consulate General in HCM City, the Korean Foundation, and the Korean International Co-operation Agency (KOICA), the event attracted thousands of students from across the region.

A series of activities was held, including a competition to design uniforms for the Hangeul Festival 2018, an exhibition of South Korean handicraft products, performances of Korean culture and art, and quiz shows on Korea.

Attendees had the chance to try Korean food like kimchi (fermented napa cabbage), wear the Hanbok (Korean traditional costumes) and play folk games.

On the occasion, Sejong scholarships by the Korean Foundation were awarded to 14 outstanding students representing 14 universities and colleges. 

Once every year, the Hangeul Day is celebrated among Vietnamese universities which teach Korean language for undergraduates.

The meaning of this day is about commemorating the invention and the proclamation of Hangeul, the alphabet of the Korean language.

However, in Viet Nam, this day provides more than that. It is not only an opportunity for Korean students in Viet Nam to share their culture with local people but also for Vietnamese students to learn more about Korea. — VNS
