Acclaimed Italian flautist blows back into Viet Nam

HA NOI — World-acclaimed Italian flutist Andrea Griminelli, who debuted in Ha Noi in 2008, will return to the city for another concert next Monday.

Monday's concert, will feature Singaporean pianist Lim Yan, accompanying Griminelli who will perform famous compositions, including the Sonata in C major by G. Donizetti, the sonata Allergetto Malinconico, Cantilena, and Presto Giocoso by F. Poulenc, soundtracks from the movies La Strada, Romeo and Juliet, The Godfather and a medley from the movies The Mission, Cinema Paradiso.

Acclaimed by critics and audiences for sensitive interpretations and astonishing technique, Griminelli began playing the flute at the age of ten and studied with legendary flutists Jean-Pierre Rampal and Sir James Galway.

During his studies with Rampal at the Paris Conservatory, Griminelli won music competitions in Stresa and Alessandria, Italy. He was awarded the prestigious Prix de Paris two times in a row in 1983 and 1984.

In 1984, at the age of 25, he was invited by Luciano Pavarotti to perform in Pavarotti's now famous concert in New York's Madison Square Garden. This was the beginning of a long-standing collaboration with the great tenor that led to unforgettable performances in London's Hyde Park, New York's Central Park, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Red Square in Moscow.

The New York Times has called him "one of the eight top emerging artists of the 90s".

He has played in most of the prestigious theatres and concert halls together with famous orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic, the Berlin Symphony, the Munchner Rundfunkorchester, the London Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

In 1991 Griminelli was knighted by the President of the Italian Republic, and became an Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2003.

He also performed in a concert for the closing ceremony of the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

The prestigious Golden Pavarotti Award will be granted to Griminelli on October 7.

His pianist Lim Yan, started playing the piano at the age of five and completed his studies in the United Kingdom. Back home in Singapore, Yan has appeared with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in such works as Grieg's Piano Concerto, Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. In 2006, Yan was granted the Young Artist Award from the National Arts Council.

Organised by the Embassy of Italy in Viet Nam with the sponsorship of Italian company Valvitalia, the concert will start at 8pm on Monday at the Opera House. The concert is part of a programme of performances held during the Italian Music Month featuring the participation of outstanding Italian musicians.
