HA NOI — Monthly TV series Music Road will feature famous pianist and composer Nguyen Anh 9 at a live show held in HCM City on Sunday.

The show will feature many of Nguyen Anh 9's most-loved songs, including No, Hello My Sadness, Love Song on a Rainy Afternoon, Who Sees You Out, and Aloneness.

The veteran pianist, whose real name is Nguyen Dinh Anh, will be joined by famous singers including Anh Tuyet, Hong Hanh, and Duc Tuan in a show that celebrates the pianist's prolific 50-year career.

The show also offers Nguyen Anh 9 a chance to tell his life story and meet some of his many fans.

Born in Phan Rang, Ninh Thuan Province in 1940, Nguyen Anh 9 developed an interest in the piano at an early age. He says he remembers practising the ‘piano' on a piece of cardboard with piano keys drawn onto it while other boys his age were playing outside. One decade later, that boy became the musician Nguyen Anh 9.

The pianist gained valuable public exposure while he was still young thanks to his performances on Sai Gon Radio Station and Da Lat Radio Station.

Nguyen Anh 9 didn't begin composing songs until he had established a career as a pianist. He was inspired to begin writing songs himself while on tour in Japan. That's where his first song No was written, after he was asked if he still loves his girlfriend.

Nguyen Anh 9 famously replied to the question with an impromptu song, singing ‘no, no, I don't love you anymore'.

The song No became very popular and its success encouraged him to start his career as a song writer.

Nguyen Anh 9 says one of his favourite self-composed songs is Aloneness.

"The song is typical of my music," he said. "It was also inspired by Chopin."

The musician says he aims for his work to celebrate the human value of love.

"If one day on the street I see a lovelorn person who sings Hello My Sadness or When My Lover Leaves, I am very happy because my music can speak to others, share their feelings and help them overcome the pain of love," he said.

The composer, who also writes film music, still plays his piano at his Tieng Duong Cam Cafe in HCM City every night.

The Music Road show will take place at 8pm on Sunday at HCM City's Military Theatre and will be aired live on VTV3 . — VNS
