Vietnamese documentary wins film festival award

HA NOI — A documentary featuring a Vietnamese martial artist filmed by Quang Ngai Television has won the Guirlande d' Honneur at the 28th Sport Movies and TV festival that ended in Milan on Tuesday.

Titled Doi Vo (Martial Arts Life), the documentary features the moving story of the life and passion of veteran martial artist Ngo Bong, who was born in Tu Nghia District, in the central province of Quang Ngai. His name is synonymous with Hung Ke Quyen, a local martial art dating back to the Tay Son reign (1778-1802).

Thirteen television and cinema works including feature films, documentaries, TV reports, television shows, cinema technology and advertisements were also awarded at the festival.

The host Italy won four awards while China and Russia won two at the festival where 103 countries were represented.

The award winners will be screened in Doha (Qatar) between November 15 and 18, according to the Federation of International Cinema and Television Sport (Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs).

Art exhibition spotlights hopes of a greener city

HCM CITY — A new exhibition of paintings and installations by 28 young HCM City artists expresses the artists' feelings about man's relationship with the modern environment.

The show at HCM City Fine Arts Association, which features modern paintings, graphic art pieces and art installations, is in preparation for the Viet Nam Art Biennale 2011 for young lecturers and students in Ha Noi.

The main topic is the modern city environment and how human's interact with it. Some of the paintings also look at the natural environment and space and the beauty of humanity.

Le Huy Cuu used symbolism to express the need for more green space in the city. Limkhim Katy shares the same topic with her semi-abstract painting Bui Trong Thanh Pho (Dust in the City) of a beautiful girl standing in a fog of dust in the city.

Group spokesman, painter Nguyen Son, said the artists had painted about how they interact with the city environment because it was such a big part of their lives.

The exhibition is at HCM City Fine Arts Association, 218A Pasteur, District 3, HCM City.

Children's traffic safety park opens in Dong Nai Province

DONG NAI — Non-profit organisation Asia Injury Prevention Foundation and express delivery company FedEx on Wednesday opened a "traffic safety park" at a school in Dong Nai Province.

The 1,700sq.m park in Quang Bien Primary School is designed like a small town to provide a realistic environment for students to practice traffic safety skills. It has highways, one- and two-way streets, a pedestrian bridge, railway line, traffic signs, sidewalks, and intersections.

The donors also handed over software and teaching equipment including a laptop and projector and screen to the school. — VNS
