HA NOI — A lively performance by German jazz ensemble Tharichen's Tentett in Ha Noi this Friday will kick off this year's European Music Festival.

Founded in Berlin in 1999 by pianist Nicolai Tharichen and singer Michael Schiefel, the band features 10 top jazz musicians.

German newspaper Suddeutsche praises the group as "the most compositionally successful, most sophisticatedly arranged and most humorously presented music that Germany has to offer from a big band at the moment". Frankfurter Allgemeine says about vocalist Michael Schiefel, "Germany has perhaps never had such a jazz singer."

The ensemble is notable for its originality and fascinating improvisations, thus creating its own unique jazz style: pop meets chamber music, spiced with the gentle voice of Schiefel.

Before Friday's opening show at the city's Opera House, the ensemble will perform a preview at the Goethe Institute accompanied by local Vietnamese musicians on Thursday.

This year's European Music Festival, which will take place in Ha Noi and HCM City, will also feature German pianist Hinrich Alpers, Spain's El Guincho, Austrian duo z.b.+, Belgian trio Fabien Degryse, and Dutch trio Yuri Honing. A total of 22 musicians will present different music genres, including classical, jazz, world and pop.

Except for the opening nights at the Opera House in Ha Noi and HCM City respectively, other concerts will take place at the Youth Theatre in Ha Noi and the Music Conservatory in HCM City.

Over the past 10 years, the annual European Music Festival in Viet Nam has introduced a remarkably diverse line-up of concerts, promoting the richness of European culture.

The festival will mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the European Union and Viet Nam

Sean Doyle, ambassador and head of the Delegation of the EU said, "The event is an annual celebration of musical excellence that makes the joy of music accessible to all. Whether your primary interest is in serious contemporary music, world music, jazz, international cultural development or just enjoying fantastic entertainment, the European Music Festival offers unforgettable concerts to connect with."

Free tickets for all performances can be reserved and collected at the Goethe Institute in Ha Noi at 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, and in Goethe Institute in HCM City at 18 Road 1, Do Thanh Residental Quarter, Ward 4, District 3. — VNS
