HA NOI — The famous operatic pop vocal quartet of male singers, Il Divo, will perform at the crowning ceremony of the Miss Viet Nam World pageant next month.

Created by British music producer TV star Simon Cowell, the group includes Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, American tenor David Miller, and French pop singer Sebastien Izambard. They sing in English, Italian, Spanish, and French.

The quartet has been acclaimed as the "Most Multinational UK No 1 Album Group" in the 2006 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Il Divo also was the special guest band participating in singer Barbra Streisand's 2006 North American tour.

In the same year, Il Divo performed the 2006 FIFA World Cup official song, The Time of Our Lives, with R&B singer Toni Braxton live at the opening match between Germany and Costa Rica, and again a month later at the closing ceremony.

The quartet released their debut album Il Divo in November 2004 in the UK, which includes three songs in English, six songs in Italian, and three songs in Spanish. The first single from the album was Regresa a mi (Unbreak My Heart), which was original version composed in English and was popularised by singer Toni Braxton in 1997. To date the album has sold about 5 million copies worldwide.

Other albums by the group include Ancora, The Christmas Collection, Voices, Siempre, and The Promise. Visiting Viet Nam for the first time, Il Divo have been invited for just one special performance by the beauty contest's organisation board.

They will arrive in the country on August 19, two days before their sole performance, but its details are being kept secret until the last minute to surprise and delight the audience, the organisers said.

Carlos Marin said he and his fellow band members had hard much about Viet Nam as a beautiful, peaceful, and friendly country. They expect to bring audiences in Viet Nam a stunning music banquet.

The quartet's performance will take place on August 21 in the Vinpearl Land Resort&Spa in the central coastal city of Nha Trang. — VNS
