Women's club set to host annual charity bazaar on Sunday

HA NOI — An annual charity bazaar will be held on Sunday by the Ha Noi International Women's Club, a non-profit social group of expatriate women.

The 19th annual bazaar, at the Water Sport Centre which is opposite to the My Dinh National Stadium, would showcase the diverse cultures of the expatriate community in Ha Noi and so would be the perfect place to look for handicrafts from all over the world, a club spokesperson said.

There would be a kid's corner to keep the little ones entertained while adults could bid on items in the silent auction or simply kick back with a cold drink and enjoy the cuisine of more than 30 countries.

The bazaar was supported by embassies and communities and local and foreign businesses. All the proceeds would go to supporting charities in and around Ha Noi.

Tickets cost VND100,000 (US$5)for adults and VND50,000 for children aged 3-12. Children under 3 are free. Tickets will be available at the gate or can be purchased in advance from Pure Heaven, JAFA, Jaspas, Oasis, and Restaurant Number Five. Vietnamese teen in top 10 at supermodel pageant in China

HA NOI — Vietnamese supermodel Ngoc Thach, 19, finished in the top 10 of the Miss Model of the World pageant on Saturday in Shenzhen, China.

She also won the prize for Best Evening Gown in the competition, which attracted 60 contestants from around the world.

Thach has had two years experience on the catwalk and won the Gold Cup in the Viet Nam Supermodel competition in 2010.

Sales of novel ‘Floating Lives' take off after movie adaptation

HA NOI — Copies of Nguyen Ngoc Tu's novel Canh Dong Bat Tan (Floating Lives) have sold out now that the film adapted from the book has become a box-office hit, according to the publisher.

The book, already in its 24th printing, has sold a total of 108,000 copies, says Tre Publishing House, which announced plans for an additional reprint. The book tells the story of a family leading a nomadic life in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region.

Long Bien Bridge writing contest ends without top prize winner

HA NOI — A writing contest on the theme of Long Bien Bridge, entitled Dragon Bridge Tells a Thousand-Year Story, wrapped up at the conclusion of the Long Bien Bridge Festival here on Sunday without a top prize awarded. Second prizes went to entries by Pham Huong Thuy and Tran Cong Huyen, as well as US photographer Douglas Jardine. The contest, launched two months ago by the newspaper The Thao & Van Hoa (Sports and Culture) and Maison des Arts, received about 200 entries.

New film in Ha Noi promises to be one of nation's most modern

HA NOI — A new film studio called Focus 300, with modern equipment imported from the US, has been launched in Ha Noi's Gia Lam District after three months under construction. With a small area of just 700sq.m, the studio is still one of the most modern in Viet Nam, with up-to-date sound and lighting systems and specialised cameras to shoot underwater.

Studio director Le Thanh Hai, a cinematographer, built Focus 300 after visiting film studios around the world, with an aim to create a professional environment for Vietnamese filmmakers. — VNS
